Singles In Your Area: w/c Feb 10
New singles and videos from Clairo, Lady Gaga, TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, and much more.
> A Place to Bury Strangers - "Plastic Future"
via /r/Indieheads
A retro sounding video to accompany a throwback track - its giving big Joy Division vibes for me. Decent song too!
> Cameron Whitcomb - "Hundred Mile High"
Hot 40 Singles: #10
Canadian-born American Idol contestant Whitcomb has a voice ready to play alongside those Lumineers/Benson Boone tracks you hear all the time.
> Clairo - "Terrapin"
via /r/Indieheads
Off the back of her appearance at Laneway, the video for Clairo’s gorgeous, laid-back new single “Terrapin” (from last year’s brilliant album Charm) stars Weird Al Yankovic in full ham-it-up mode.
> Destroyer - "Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World"
via /r/Indieheads
Vancouver-based indie rockers Destroyer have been at it a long time, forming in 1995. Upcoming new album Dan’s Boogie will be their 14th overall.
> Esther Rose - "New Bad"
via /r/Indieheads
Rose is one of those country singers with wide appeal outside of her chosen genre; “New Bad” is no exception, its country backbone and Rose’s typically chilled out vocals dripping with indie rock singer-songwriter charm.
> Jennie - "Love Hangover (ft Dominic Fike)"
Hot 40 Singles: #07
Rosé got Bruno Mars. Jennie got Dominic Pike. They are not the same.
> Johnny Calvert - "Temptation (ft Ella Monnery)"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #10
Auckland-based producer (and George FM DJ) Calvert lands on the charts with his latest house-techno track. Its pretty good, to be honest!
> Lady Gaga - "Abracadabra"
Hot 40 Singles: #03
Hold on - is Lady Gaga back? I think we’re back, people.
> Morgan Wallen - "I'm The Problem"
Hot 40 Singles: #02
Official Top 40 Singles: #37
Another solid single from the former Voice contestant turned country superstar as he ventures outside the confines of his usual down-home sound.
> Netsky - "California (ft Cloves)"
Hot 40 Singles: #09
Simple and effective drum and bass from the Belgian DJ, with a gorgeously understated vocal from Australian singer CLOVES.
> No Cigar - "Problem"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #04
Hot 40 Singles: #20
Kiwi alt-indie band No Cigar boast a sold out tour across Europe and one of the big outcomes is this new single, conceived while on that tour. Think Kings Of Leon crossed with the Black Seeds and you’re about right.
> Prins - "Run!"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #01
Hot 40 Singles: #12
Christchurch-based singer - and self-titled ‘pop queen’ - hit the top of the Hot Aotearoa chart this week with new single “Run!”.
> Rex Atirai - "Tangata Huruhuru"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #05
Hot 40 Singles: #28
Atirai’s cute ukelele and Reo Māori track came in for a bunch of mainstream attention this week - its a super fun and super Kiwi track. Good stuff.
> Tash Sultana - "Milk & Honey"
via /r/Indieheads
Melbourne-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is back with a new single - and its very Kiwi dub sounding, if I may say so.
> Tawhaki - "Valleys"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #08
Proudly Kiwi and proudly reggae, Tawhaki has penned this tribute to his forebears, leveraging his tenor-bass leaning vocal register.
> Tunde Adebimpe - "Magnetic"
via TheNeedleDrop
The TV On The Radio vocalist (and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast member) is back with the second single from his upcoming solo record, and its a pretty big improvement on the first single.
> Unknown Mortal Orchestra - "Earth 1"
via /r/Indieheads
The Nielsen Brothers are back at it again, with a second instrumental album coming in March; “Earth 1” is the first flute-heavy track.
> Zac Taylor - "Superficial Love"
Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles: #09
A fairly decent funk-pop track from the former Titanium singer (remember Titanium, the boy band created by The Edge?!) out of Whakatane.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t link to Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show at yesterdays Superbowl LIX - the song choices were perfect, the choreography was on point, the cheeky smile on ‘Say, Drake' …’ was perfect, the Serena cameo was electrifying, and the political message was received loud and clear. Brilliant.
Thanks for reading e te whanau.
Be back Friday with My Week In Music.
